Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What should I wear?

The daily attire for Bruinettes auditions is full Glam, a black, cropped, fitted, tank or short sleeved top (sports bra ok), black biking shorts or briefs, tights, and sneakers or dance shoes. Tights should match your skin tone. Bring jazz shoes. Please cover all tattoos and remove all piercings (outside of individual earlobe piercings) and No long fingernails for safety reasons.

  • What is considered Full Glam?

Full glam for Bruinettes is considered a full face of makeup (foundation, concealer, contour, bronzer, blush, natural smokey eyeshadow , lashes & nude-pink lip). Please refer to our Instagram for inspo. If you don’t know how to do your makeup, don’t worry and do your best. If you make the team, that is a skill you will learn.

  • What are the coaches looking for?

Remember you are being judged the entire time. Professionalism is paramount. Coaches are putting together the best team. Do you learn quickly? Do you get along with others? Do you take corrections well and apply them? Always keep a positive attitude—the coaches and judges can make a cut at any time, so always be on point!

  • Is there anything I should have?

Prepare for success by staying hydrated—drink plenty of water before and during the audition. Make sure your grooming and hygiene items are nearby to retouch hair and makeup between rounds. Have your fully stocked dance bag within reach, including knee pads, braces or wraps, extra tights, and shoes, in case you’re asked to show different styles or techniques.

Be sure to film or join Zoom in horizontal (landscape) mode, and ensure your full body and face are clearly visible at all times. Set up your space in a clean, distraction-free area with good lighting, and test your technology (camera, audio, Wi-Fi) in advance. If you anticipate any technical difficulties, please communicate them ahead of time with the coaching staff. Most importantly, come ready to work hard and give it your all!

  • Can I still audition if I have not been accepted to UCLA yet?

Not at this moment—you must be a currently enrolled student at UCLA with a current UID number given at the time of acceptance for incoming students.

  • If I make the team, when does my season start?

If you are selected to attend Band Camp, you will be required to pay a non-refundable $300 Band Camp fee and participate in mandatory Zoom check-ins with Captains and Coaches prior to arrival. You must plan to be in Los Angeles by September 12th, as Band Camp will officially begin on September 13th. If you are chosen for the team following Band Camp, the season will begin immediately with a mandatory team meeting on September 22nd.

  • What do auditions consist of?

Dancers will learn a dance similar to our field show style, Stands and Parade drills, sit for an interview, and perform a solo for our judging panel. Solos should be no longer than 1 minute and should be in the following genres: ballet (no pointe), jazz, modern, hip-hop, tap, cultural dance styles (i.e: African, Flamenco, Salsa, etc). Clean music only. No heels; however, the attire for solos is the dancer's choice.

  • What are some specific skills I should work on?

Dancers should work to be proficient in Ballet, Jazz and Hip Hop. This includes turns, jumps, and performance quality. Double/Triple pirouettes are mandatory. Advanced turning jumps (calypso, axle, disc) and Turning combinations are some skills that can set you apart from the competition. Flexibility in the legs and back allow for ease of movement. Acro is not mandatory but highly appreciated.

  • Do I need to have prior danceline experience?

Dancers do not need prior danceline experience, this style is taught & mastered during rehearsals and band camp with direction of our experienced coaching staff and student leadership.

Note: If you need assistance with some of the terms, you can attend our Technique clinics, and/or search them up online to locate definitions, pictures, and videos of the skills. We recommend the “Just for Kix” Youtube channel.
